The town is named after Paarl Rock, a huge granite outcrop on Paarl Mountain that gleams like a pearl ("paarl" in Dutch) when wet after rain, and it still overlooks the town today.
Paarl is about 15-20 minutes' drive from Franschhoek and roughly 20-25 minutes from Stellenbosch, so all three Winelands towns are easy to combine in a single day trip.
Paarl has a Mediterranean climate typical of the Boland, with hot dry summers well suited to the surrounding vineyards and mild, wetter winters between May and August.
Paarl is home to the Afrikaans Language Monument (Taalmonument) on the edge of town, built in 1975 to mark the site where the Afrikaans language movement began in the 1870s.
