The Klein Karoo's dry climate and feather boom of the early 1900s made Oudtshoorn the centre of South Africa's ostrich farming industry, and it still supplies most of the world's ostrich leather and meat today.
The Cango Caves are about 30km north of town on the road toward the Swartberg Pass, roughly a 25-minute drive, making them an easy half-day trip from any Oudtshoorn stay.
The Swartberg Pass is an unpaved mountain pass with sharp switchbacks and steep drops, spectacular but slow going; a 2WD car can manage it in dry weather, but it is not recommended after heavy rain or snow.
Oudtshoorn sits in the semi-arid Klein Karoo, so summers are hot and dry with temperatures often above 30°C, while winters are mild by day and can be cold at night.
